Jas Hennessy & Co., popularly known simply as Hennessy is a French cognac distiller headquartered in Cognac, France. It has a big monopoly as it produces more than 40% of the world’s cognac.
Hennessy is a Cognac, which is a type of brandy. Contrary to popular belief, Hennessy is specifically not a whiskey. Hennessy Cognac is made from grapes, not barley or wheat. Both spirits are distilled and aged in oak barrels, but thats the only similarities they share.
In order for a spirit to be called “Cognac,” it must meet very specific legal requirements. These requirements include being produced in the wine-growing region surrounding Cognac, France, using specific grape varietals, being twice distilled in copper pot stills which impart flavor and must be aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of two years (even though most cognacs age much longer than the legal minimum).
