An orphanage is an institution or a place where children without parents are cared for and housed. If a child has no parents because the parents died, the child is considered an orphan. An orphanage will care for tiny babies and also older children without parents. Orphanages care for children until they can be placed in homes and adopted.
A trip to an orphanage is a favorite family activity for some families. And for many compassionate people, visiting and donating to foster homes has become a way of life. Others see charitable homes as a way to give back to society.
Whatever your point of view or your motivation for visiting or supporting foster homes, you deserve some recognition. Those are, of course, noble reasons. Most of us have no idea what it’s like to have no roots or, worse, to have our own family. Those who are supposed to look after you and protect you from the ups and downs of life turn their backs on you.
Even if you are unfamiliar with the plight of orphans and abandoned children, the almost helpless and innocent life of a child should give you an idea of what these homeless children go through every day of their young lives, and sometimes even into adulthood.
In most cases, these children face untold hunger, emotional starvation, neglect, and, in the worst-case scenario, physical and sexual abuse. As individuals and members of society, we owe it not only to ourselves but also to humanity to do our part in reducing the magnitude of orphans’ suffering.
