Not long ago was when the Bank of Ghana introduced Ghana’s highest coin currency, that is the GHS 2.00 coin in the country.

Many Ghanaians reacted to the release of this GHS 2.00 coin — but later decided to give it a try by using it for transactions at the markets, bank, shop, schools, exchange, making and receiving payments and much more.

Before, the GHS 1.00 was the only highest coin currency that is available in Ghana until the Bank of Ghana introduced the GHS 2.00 coin on the later part — as part of its legal tender for making transactions.

The Bank of Ghana

According to the Wikipedia, the Bank of Ghana (abbreviated as BoG) is the central bank of Ghana. The bank has its headquarters located in Accra and was formed in the year 1957. Bank of Ghana is active in developing financial inclusion policy and is a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion in the country. The currency used in Ghana is the Ghanaian Cedi with a short form like this; GHS.

Images of the New GH¢2 Coin in Ghana

  • The front image is the Ghana Coat of Arms.
  • The back image is the Seat of Government building (Jubilee House) with surrounding fence.

The Security features on both sides of the coin are:

  • Latent image which shows alternating image of the numeral ‘2’ and start when tilted
  • Distinct ten (10) sided shape with serrations at the edges
  • Bimetallic material with outer gold colour and inner silver colour
  • Micro lettering of the small writing ‘Ghana 2 Cedi’ at the back of the coin.
  • National arms on inner disc, date below, and the latent image between left and right, depicting the value.

Why has the Bank of Ghana introduced GH¢2 coins?

The Bank of Ghana intends to gradually replace its lower banknotes
denominations with coins to reduce its cost of printing. Bank of Ghana will also embark on a vigorous campaign among road transport workers, market operators, small businesses, supermarkets, vendors and others to create avenues for the usage of the coins including develop infrastructures for coin usage.
