History
Tema Senior High School was established and commissioned on 22nd September, 1961, by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It was one of the schools the first President built in the 1960s under the Accelerated Development Plan aimed at expanding educational programme. The School was opened on Friday, September 22nd, 1961 with an initial intake of 52 students. The number increased to 105 by the end of the month. There were 3 Form1 streams [A, B and C]. These continued to the Sixth Form Level and turned out the first batch of students in 1968. The subjects offered at the GSE were: English, Economics, Geography, History and Logic for the Arts and Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Pure and Applied Mathematics for the Sciences.
Mr F. K. Buah, its first headmaster, was a historian, writer, educationist and former politician. His vision for the school was to model it to be a well endowed center of excellence, befitting the status of the Port city of Tema. In line with the plan, subjects taught included Accounts, Arts, Business Studies, Civics, Commerce, Ghanaian Languages, Home Science, Latin, Logic, Shorthand/Typing and Science.
